In-Depth in the News - "Protecting Your Children from Cyber-Criminals with Keylogger Software" (As reported on Fox 7 News in May)

One Austin father wants other parents to use the same technology Cyber-crooks use to protect their children. Cyber-criminals use keylogger software to steal passwords and other vital information by capturing every keystroke you make.

Cris DeWitt with In Depth Security says parents should use it to monitor what their children are doing online. He uses one at home. It sends him a daily report and shows what Web sites his children visited, how long they were there, what the kids are typing, and when they log on and log off.

And the good news, for parents that is, is the software is hidden and hard to detect.

Two products recommended by Cris DeWitt and In Depth Security include Netnanny and EBlaster. To learn more about these products, visit www.netnanny.com and www.eblaster.com.

Free THAWTE Notary Services - In-Depth Security is now a member of the Thawte Web of Trust and Cris DeWitt, CISSP, is our Thawte WOT Notary. As a result, we can now assert your identity within the Thawte Freemail WOT. So what's this "Thawte Web of Trust" thing? The thawte Web of Trust (WOT) is a Certification system that allows your identity to be validated for use in your Personal Certificate. These free personal certificates (X.509) allow you to sign and encrypt your email communications and/or to identify you to servers that require users to provide identification via X.509 digital certificates. The Thawte WOT is an X.509 Certifying Authority (CA) modeled after Phil Zimmermann's "Web of Trust" concept (1980 - PGP) which replaces the centralized ("top down") PKI system with a network of trust statements made by individuals about one another.

For more information or to request us to notarize your ID for your Thawte Freemail Certificate, please email us at notary@indepthsec.com or call us at 512-263-8240.

In-Depth featured on Fox 7 News - As reported by multiple news services, keylogger use is on the rise, with millions of dollars at stake in stolen money and ties to organized crime. On Monday, February 27, 2006, FOX 7 News came to In-depth Security for expertise on how to prevent keyloggers from exploiting your computer and potentially stealing your passwords. The discussion also included how to prevent an attacker from getting ANY type of illicit software installed on your system.

Most corporations have, or should have, gateway firewalls that filter potentially harmful attachments from email, Internet downloads and virus traffic from various network protocols, providing an adequate safety net for their employees. However, when these employees go home and turn on their home systems, they are usually much less protected. Therefore, it is imperative that every computer user know the necessary steps to keep their computer and personal information protected. The number 1 way to prevent being a victim is to educate yourself on computer security. You don’t have to become an expert, just a well-informed computer user. Most modern attacks are attacking you personally through social engineering mechanisms, where you actually have to “do” something (open the email attachment, click the link, accept the download, etc.). Security software cannot detect ALL of these behaviors, so you need to be able to detect potentially illicit behaviors as well. Also, keep your system current on operating system patches, anti-virus definitions, anti-spyware definitions and use an email service that filters for viruses and spam. Call us today at 512-263-8240 for details about classes we provide on information security problems and solutions.

May 9, 2005 Sarbanes-Oxley and Payment Card Industry Management Tool Developed - Identity theft and credit card fraud has become very big business. Recently, US government security agencies disbanded an online 4,000- member organized crime syndicate for trafficking in stolen credit cards, goods, and falsified documents . Other heavily publicized incidents related to hacking, theft or loss of confidential personal information demonstrates the potential for significant financial losses and a negative impact on consumer confidence. These include:

- Bank of America's loss of approximately 1.2 million government charge card holder account files in December of 2004 .
- As reported in May of 2005, Harvard University Credit Union lost approximately 700 credit card accounts, which included CEO Eugene Foley's information that resulted in a personal loss to him of over $2000.00 .
- Polo Ralph Lauren's loss by theft of approximately 180,000 card holder's account information in April of 2005

Considering the large number of credit card transactions that occur daily, face to face and electronically, the risk of financial loss is high. To reduce this risk, credit card companies like Visa, MasterCard and American Express, have instituted information security standards (CISP - Cardholder Information Security Program, AMEX Data Security Requirements) that companies must adhere to in order to maintain good standing with the credit card companies and to avoid fines or even loss of service. Combine these requirements with the stringent Sarbanes-Oxley governmental regulations, and companies must expend significant effort to meet these multiple requirements. To help demystify this myriad of requirements, In-Depth Security has developed a tool that maps the control objectives from Sarbanes-Oxley with those of Visa/MasterCard and American Express. Click here for a preview of this valuable too. Order your copy of this tool in its entirety by contacting our sales department at 512.263.8240.
